Decontamination of medical instruments begins right at the site of the procedure. Appropriate steps must be taken even at that stage to ensure an effective decontamination process. Errors made at this stage, such as allowing contaminants to dry, using an inappropriate preparation, or inadequate protection of the material, are the most frequent causes of corrosion and damage to instruments, pose a significant risk of exposure to staff, and may prevent the proper execution of subsequent stages such as disinfection and sterilisation.
